THWEATT is the man. He's fun and awesome. He doesn't really answer student's questions, but take it for what it is. His exams aren't cool.

He seems energetic and knowledgable. However, from the condescending welcome emails you can kinda tell what kind of semester you are in for. He has an alpha nerd mentality that he must be right. There was also a couple of unprofessional periods in the class. I don't know that I need to know that he has "stuff going on in his head" or that he required personal days for events the may not be over.

Thweatt is very thorough in his lectures. I thought DD was so much easier than 2504 b/c they changed the hardware requirements (no more NAND/XOR conversion nightmares). He is though...tough on grading. It's almost impossible to get points back, so make sure you do it right first and check your work.

He is a great teacher and if see him in his office hours with good questions (not questions like how am I suppose to do this...he doesn't like those) he's really helpful. If you show him that you are really trying he'll do his best to help you find your answer. Yay Thweatt! Hopefully he'll be on TV more.

Ha! This sounds just like the Jason I knew in high school. Very smart, but always had to be right. As I recall, he & his best friend gave each other Cliffs Notes for Christmas. Cocky too - I wasn't at all surprised he didn't make it to a very high level on Millionaire...

Thweatt is not only the best teacher at VT, but the best I've ever had. I have had him for Digital Design I and Microprocessor System Design I can say he's definitely better at DDI (well this was only his second time teaching micro). Thweatt is the smartest person you will ever meet, no doubt about that. He is a brilliant lecturer who will make sure the class understands the subject before he moves on. And his sense of humor... wow. If you're not entertained in his class, you should resign. There is hardly ever a dull moment. He does have his quirks though; sometimes he will go on for 30 minutes to answer one person's question which obviously gets tedious (only in micro). He does use overly complicated words too often, so bring your dictionary. Grading was definitely fair and his respect to students was excellent. Overall the best ECE teacher for sure. Be sure to get Thweatt for DDI.

I wanted to like Thweatt. I really did. He has an interesting personality and is very lively. To a fault, unfortunately.

I have tried extremely hard to follow him in class and I simply can't. He is too animated to take seriously and follow in intelligent thought... especially with heavily layered concepts.

I feel like I am constantly being shouted at. I think this is a function of his being loud as well as animated.

He is WAYY too verbose and wordy. Too many $5 words. While I share with him a solid grasp of the English language (and I won't lie, I like flexing my ability to write eloquently, too), when you are trying to teach a concept, that is not the time to try to sound overly intelligent.
In fact, my favorite teachers are the ones who make things the most dumbed down. And believe me, I'm not dumb. I don't NEED it like that but it makes for a much better learning experience.

He is a NAZI. N-A-Z-I. He has an unlimited pool of mental and physical energy but doesn't realize that not everyone shares this with him. Homework assignments are extensively long. He expects alot out of you. This is noble, certainly, but realize there are limits.

He is mildly disrespectful but I don't think he realizes this. I have sent him multiple emails to which I receive no response.
Professor Thweatt, I don't care how stupid or annoying my email may be... I PAY YOUR SALARY AND DESERVE A RESPONSE! PERIOD. Don't you DARE ignore me!
Unfortunately for me, you grade my papers. Making a scene like that isn't worth it. But here is the review you deserve about it.

Once I challenged him about a contradiction he made about an assignment and he was determined to win the fight. I felt like I was in an argument with a child and, because he had authority, he whined I was wrong and said he was ultimately right. I wasn't aggressive or angry. In fact, I didn't even care what the outcome was. I was trying to bring something to his attention to benefit HIM but he immediately took the offensive role and attacked! Frankly, he was rude. I was trying to be amicable about something and he basically told me where to take it.
Acceptable for a friend, a peer, another 20-something.
Unacceptable for a teacher.

I'm sorry, Professor Thweatt. I tried to see the good in your unique personality and style. I wanted to find something positive in all of that. Unfortunately, I couldn't make it happen. Please tone things down. Relax. Bring it down about 20 levels. You are teaching 20-something college students. We aren't in PhDs. In fact, some of us don't even give a sh*t. Still, making it hard is one thing... but you take many avenues to excess.

The Good:
1. Solid understanding of his material.
2. Overall grading is fair. He distributes
his grades over the entire semester's
work. No one project/test will destroy
your overall grade.
3. His supplementary notes are thorough
BUT not his lecture notes.
4. Punctual
5. Tests are reasonable but long

The Bad:
1. Vocabulary is so extensive he tends to
overstate the information. Almost
appears to be deliberately confusing.
2. You will get 10 points off for no cover
page. Simple things like that cost you.
3. No concrete test dates and project due
dates on the syllabus.
4. Makes in class announcements of test
date, only once at start of class. No
emails or postings on blackboard.
5. Moody, so talk to him another day and
bring flowers.

The Ugly:
1. He's the only guy teaching this class.
2. Probably the most useless class material.

I took him for a graduate level course...his first time teaching one obviously. Be prepared for he will treat you like an 18 year old undergrad student even though you might have worked in the real world for 20 years and have more experience then he has in the business world.

He is very knowledgable in the subject but as others have mentioned can be very moody. When he responds to messages on blackboard he will often be short and disrespectful if you happen to have an opinion other than his or make an incorrect assumption. Censorship of the discussions is also done in his class. If a blackboard post seems critical of his course or of himself he will simply delete it without even answering you. He will hold you to the letter to all policies he writes for the course but will promise the class material for an exam or assignment only to never produce it. Not even an apology.

He NEVER grades assignments in a timely manner. You will be lucky to see your grades for homework and projects before the term is over. That is very IRRESPONSIBLE for an instructor.

If you are a grad student and want to feel like and be treated like you are in high school again then by all means take one of his courses. I will stay away from him. He doesnt even lecture the class but only has "office hours". Lectures are prerecorded by another professor. He demands respect without earning it or giving it back.

Thweatt is a great teacher hands down. He holds plenty of office hours, and when you go see him in his office he will sit you down and explain everything to you. He genuinly cares that you understand the material, and will dip into the most basic parts of a problem in helping you undertsand it. The only catch to this is if you are waiting in line to see him in his office, be prepared to wait a long time.

As said before, the projects will take up an entire weekend at the very least. If you wait until the last weekend before a proiject is due, prepare to sit down friday afternoon and not get up until sunday night.

Thweatt's lectures are exciting and entertaining. I think he flies through lectures too quickly, and I personally didnt understand the stuff he was talking about until a few weeks later. However, he has very helpful word files on blackboard which help you understand homeworks/projects.

The tests are long and hard but he grades them accordingly. The project reports also take forever. This is why i rated him a 3 for grading, because he seems to take off too many points for errors in your timing file or testing procedure. He won't hesitate to take off 20% from a 25 page report/project which probably took you 30-40 hours to create if you have a poorly made timing file or incorrect testing procedure.

Other than that, this teacher is awsome. I hardly had to study for the final because by the end of the year I was so adept at working these types of problems it was like second nature.

Thweatt is an interesting person. He is lively, animated, loud, funny, tough. He does an excellent job at teaching the course material. Class is never boring, I actually look forward to his class. He sneaks in good jokes and he is never dull. He is also extremely well spoken. He is very articulate with the English language. The homework can be extremely annoying because it’s all done on the computer, and doing K-maps, Quine McCluskey, etc are a pain to do. The Exams can be tricky if you don’t read them carefully (minterms = SOP, maxterms = POS). And the projects will kill a weekend if not more. Thweatt is also tough. While he may be a nice, polite, and thoughtful person, he can be stern with grades. You had better have very good reasons if you wish to dispute with him.

I’d recommend having Thweatt in as many classes as you can. You will understand the material and enjoy class. The only drawback is your performance has to be great to earn that A.
