Chem1035 itself is a pain in the ass. This class requires work, it's not an easy A. That being said, Amateis is really nice, does interesting experiments in class, and knows how to get the material across to students. She holds review sessions before each test, posts old tests online (though they are a bit easier than the actual exams in my opinion) and she drops your lowest test grade, which helped my grade tremendously (received a B instead of a C/C+). Overall, I would say she is equally as good as Trivedi, so take whoever you can fit easier in to your schedule.

Prof Amateis teaches a hard class, but is about as fair teacher as you can ever have. She's very knowledgeable and conveys the information well. The class is definitely not an easy A, but she gives you more than enough chances to succeed. Depending on your knowledge coming in, it can be a tough class, but any way you look at it Amateis is a great teacher.

This class sucks. But a lot of majors require it so your stuck with it. Amateis is a good teacher, but still I think the class is too hard. She gives good lecture notes, but a lot of times they dont have examples of all the kinds that we need to know how to do. And the ARIS homework sucks a lot. If you have to take this class, take amateis. she makes it better than the other chem teachers, but still its no picnic and very hard to even get a c

Professor Amateis is one of the great teachers here at Tech. She adheres to the rules, is very serious about her work, and knows chemistry as well as anybody. She is almost always available to help you if you have any questions, not to mention she is always willing to help you with a smile. Go to her office hours and show her you are dedicated to doing well, she is the kindest person one-on-one.
Amateis' chemistry requires work, but if you put in the effort you will do well. Do the homework, ask questions, and study for the tests. Pretty simple. The only bad thing is that sometimes the lectures can get boring, but Amateis tries the best she can (I mean it is chemistry) to liven it up by doing fun experiments that include explosions and fireballs.

One of the best teachers at Tech I've had so far. Learned a lot very quickly, although it seemed mostly like high school chem, but whatever. Dr. Amateis was nice, smart, helpful, communicated the information very well, etc. I highly recommend her.

As a person I love professor Amateis. She is nice and very respectful. As a teacher she is OK. She does know her stuff, but her classes are extremely boring. I have lost the count of how many times she put me to sleep during lecture.

Dr. Amateis is one of the best teachers i have had in my entire life!! She is so nice to her students and if you make the effort, she is more than willing to help you. She makes herself available for your questions nearly all throughout the week and she has a weekly review session that is very helpful. She doesn't usually curve the grades because the average ends up being about a C, but she doesn't try to trick you on the tests so they are relatively easy to get good grades on if you come to class and do your home work. Also, you have 4 tests and the lowest one is dropped, so that can help your grade a lot. She also makes a practice test available on blackboard from the previous years exam. DEFINITELY get Professor Amateis for chemistry, she is extremely passionate about what she does, and does an experiment nearly every class.

I had Dr. Amateis over the summer for a program called STEP. It was not a credited course but still she taught it so well. She explained everything so I understood it. I am right now taking Chemistry and I still go back to her notes to understand somethings. She is very smart and very respectful. She understands students very well. She is one of the best teachers at Virginia Tech.

Amateis was an excellent professor, she knew her stuff and taught it well. I do admit I skipped a few of her lectures because I knew what she was teaching already but the majority I attended were able to keep me interested in the subject at hand the entire time. Her tests were not that bad, the only problem is that many of them were annoying just because of the way they were worded. There would be 3 or 4 questions asking for which solution had the highest pH and then the next would ask for the highest pOH. But that's no different than other chem tests.
The only problem I had with her, actually had little to do with her. It was the recitations that were mandatory. Homework was due there which was fine, but you had to sit through the whole thing even if you had no problems with it. Then to top it off the recitation instructor I had took points off for everything. Ex. (5*4)/2=10 was unacceptable it had to be (5*4)/2=20/2=10 and that warranted half credit on the problem which Amateis was perfectly fine with.
Besides her choice of recitation instructors and her always siding with them no matter what, she was an excellent professor.

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE DR. AMATEIS!
She is so cute! a GREAT teacher. a GREAT person. She walked into my lab class once and my lab partner was like "is that an elementary school teacher? she looks so friendly and loving" and i was like "nope! thatīs my chemistry teacher!"
Dr. Amateis reminds me of Professor McGonnegal from Harry Potter. Seriously. In class she would do mini experiments and I would just be in awe as things poofed and changed colors.. it was just like MAGIC.
Chemistry is chemistry and you must know the concept and how to solve problems on the tests but itīs not impossible. The homeowork and the quizzes arenīt too bad. Recitation is a bummer especially if you had an obnoxious TA as I did. However, the classes with Dr. Amateis will definitely make you love chemistry after youīre donīt with her class.
SWITCH IN and STAY!
